“Your SignUp events don’t have Click IDs set up. When a Pinner clicks an ad, Pinterest adds a unique click ID to the landing page URL. The URL parameter for click ID is named epik.”

Follow this guide to learn more about what this message means, why it appears, and whether any further troubleshooting is recommended to ensure that your tracking is not affected.

What is the Pinterest Click ID?

When someone clicks on a Pinterest ad and lands on your site, Pinterest automatically adds a Click ID to the URL using a parameter called epik. This Click ID is used by Pinterest to help with attribution by linking actions taken on your site back to the original ad engagement.

Understanding the Warning:

Pinterest may flag the Click ID as missing when:

  • A user triggers a sign up event but didn’t come from a Pinterest ad, so no parameter is present.
  • Your Pinterest traffic volume is low, making it harder for Pinterest to consistently detect the parameter.

Why This Warning Happens:

If Pinterest is warning you that Click IDs are not being passed with your sing up events, it’s important to know this is may not be a real tracking configuration issue.

The Click ID is being added automatically by Pinterest when users come to your site from a Pin campaign. There's no additional setup required to pass it through tracking manually. It is important to keep in mind that the Pinterest Click ID will only be available if the user who triggered the Pinterest event actually came from a Pinterest campaign or ad. If the traffic did not originate from a Pinterest source, the Click ID will not be present and this can sometimes cause Pinterest to display that warning.

Troubleshooting Pinterest Click ID Warnings for SignUp Events:

No further action is required if you're using Elevar’s Pinterest integration through GTM and have active Pinterest campaigns running. The Click ID is automatically added by Pinterest when users arrive from ads and no manual setup is needed.
