How to Customize Google Analytics 4 Source and Medium by Channel

Learn how to override Campaign Source and Campaign Medium in the Google Analytics 4 destination using Customize by Channel.

Overview

Follow this guide to learn how to customize Google Analytics 4 attribution settings by channel in Elevar. This is commonly used when you want orders from a specific sales channel (for example, ChatGPT Instant Checkout) to appear in Google Analytics 4 with a dedicated Source and Medium.

Prerequisites:

Before you begin, ensure that you have the following:

  • You have setup Google Analytics 4 as a destination in Elevar.
  • Your implementation is sending a sales channel value that you can select as a Channel Code (for example, the sales_channel value sent in an API purchase payload).

How to Customize Google Analytics 4 Source and Medium by Channel

Access Google Analytics 4 Destination:

  • Begin on the homepage of your Elevar Account and use the left-hand menu to click on the "My Tracking" tab.
  • Navigate to your destinations and select the "Google Analytics 4" destination.

Access Advanced Options:

  • Once you have accessed the Google Analytics 4 destination, use the "Setup Steps" navigation box to locate and click on the "GA4 Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Google Analytics 4 settings, locate and click on the "Advanced Options" drop-down menu.
  • Within the Advanced Options, locate and click on the "Customize by Channel" button.

Customize by Channel:

  • Once you have accessed the Customise by Channel section of the Google Analytcs 4 settings, you will need to configure the specific custom channel.
    • In the Channel Code field, select the channel you want to customize. This should match the sales channel identifier for the orders you want to override (for example, a ChatGPT-specific sales_channel value).
    • In the Campaign Source field, enter the Source you want Google Analytics 4 to use for this channel.
    • In the Campaign Medium field, enter the Medium you want Google Analytics 4 to use for this channel.

Save Changes:

  • Once you have entered all of the required information for customizing Google Analytics 4 source and medium by channel, be sure to save your changes.
  • Click on the "Save" button located at the bottom of the page.

NOTE: Update Web Container if Using Google Tag Manager for Client-Side Tracking

If you are using Google Tag Manager for client side tracking with the Google Analytics 4 destination, ensure that you update the web container after customizing Google Analytics 4 source and medium by channel.

  • Use the "Setup Steps" navigational box to locate and click on the "Client-Side Tracking" tab.
  • Navigate to the section of the page titled "Web Container Setup". Import and publish the Google Tag Manager tags for the Google Analytics 4 destination again.
  • Once you have published the new tags, click on the "Mark as Complete" button located at the bottom of the page.
