How to QA Events Using the Event Builder and Google Tag Manager
Overview
Quality Assurance (QA) for event tracking is important in ensuring that your analytics and marketing data are accurate and actionable. Using tools like the Event Builder extension and Google Tag Manager (GTM), you can efficiently verify that events are correctly tagged and firing as expected.
Identifying Tagged Sections with the Event Builder
The first step in the QA process is to identify which sections of your webpage are tagged. The Event Builder extension provides a feature called “What’s Tagged” that helps in pinpointing these areas.
Use the "What's Tagged" Feature:
-
Open the Event Builder Extension and launch the extension from your browser.
-
In the top navigation menu of the Event Builder, click on the “What’s Tagged” button.
-
Click on the button at the bottom of the extension labeled ‘Enter Visualization Mode’. This mode will highlight all sections or areas on the page that have been tagged.
-
Carefully review the highlighted sections to ensure they match your intended tagging plan.

Note: Depending on the number of tags, the page might appear cluttered with highlights. This is normal and helps you visually confirm the tagged areas.
QA Using Google Tag Manager (GTM)
Once you’ve identified the tagged areas, you need to verify that the tags are firing correctly in GTM. Follow these steps to complete the QA process.
Preview Tags:
- Open Google Tag Manager and navigate to your GTM workspace.
- Use the left-hand menu and click on the “Tags” tab. This will show you a list of all the tags configured in your workspace.
- Use the search function in the upper right-hand corner of the page to type "GA4" or the relevant tag name to quickly locate the tags you need to test.
- Select the tags you wish to test and click on the “Preview” button located in the upper right-hand corner.
- (See Figure 2)

Test Tag Firing:
Observe Tags Firing:
- Go back to your webpage and click on the sections you previously identified as tagged.
- Observe the GTM preview pane to check if the tags are firing correctly. For each click on a tagged section, you should see a corresponding “Click Event” in the GTM preview.
If a tagged area does not trigger an event in GTM, you may need to recheck the tagging configuration or re-tag the section.
Troubleshooting:
- If you encounter issues, review the tag setup and ensure that the correct triggers and variables are applied. Adjust as necessary and retest until all events are firing as expected.
Publish Changes:
- Once you’ve verified that all tags are working correctly, publish the workspace in GTM to make your changes live.
