Understanding Low Email Coverage on Add to Cart Events in Pinterest Tag Reporting

Overview

You may have received a warning from Pinterest stating:

“Your Add to Cart events have low email coverage. To fix, go to your source code and check that you are always sending us email for these events.”

Follow this guide to better understand what this message means, why it appears, and whether any additional steps are needed to maintain accurate tracking and attribution.

Understanding the Warning:

This message means that Pinterest is detecting that some or most of your Add to Cart events are not being sent with a user email address. While this may seem like a data issue at first, in most cases this is expected behavior in most Shopify stores due to how and when email data becomes available.

Why This Warning Happens:

Within Shopify, most customers have not yet provided their email address by the time they click "Add to Cart." Here's why email coverage is often low at this stage:

  • Email is not available by default: Shopify does not expose email addresses for anonymous users during early interactions like Add to Cart.
  • Email appears later in the funnel: It typically becomes available at checkout, account login, or when a customer completes a purchase.
  • Exception – Logged-in users: If the customer is logged in while adding an item to their cart, Shopify may expose the email address, but this is relatively uncommon for most traffic.

What This Means for Your Setup:

It is important to understand that in most cases, this issue is not a tracking issue or a limitation from Elevar's end.

If you're using Elevar's Pinterest integration, then we are sending the email address to Pinterest whenever Shopify makes it available. If the email is missing, it’s because Shopify didn’t surface it at that point in the user journey, not because Elevar failed to collect or send it.

Troubleshooting Low Email Coverage Warnings:

If you are seeing this warning in your Pinterest account, there are no changes needed in your Elevar setup. But you can consider using email capture popups earlier in the session because these can help with Lead events, though not directly Add to Cart.

However, it is important to note that even with popups or forms in place, Shopify may still restrict email visibility depending on the page context and event timing.
